RCIA - Frequently Asked Questions

What does RCIA mean?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.

What is RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a restoration of an ancient process for incorporating unbaptized persons into Jesus Christ through the Sacraments of the Catholic Church - Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

Who participates in RCIA?
We welcome all who are interested in joining us. RCIA is specifically for adults seeking Baptism, baptized Christians of other faith traditions interested in learning more about the Catholic faith or becoming Catholic, and Catholics who have not yet received their first Communion and Confirmation.

How long does the process last?
The process usually lasts approximately nine months, beginning in the fall and concluding at the Easter celebration.

Is there pressure to become Catholic?
We want to assist you in discerning God's will for you at this time. There is no pressure. We will support you through prayer and discussion. We are here to help.

I am already Catholic and want to receive Confirmation.
For Catholics who have already been Baptized and received their First Eucharist, we offer an
Adult Confirmation process, which may be a better fit for you than RCIA.

Is OCIA appropriate for children?
Children seven years and older who are unbaptized or Baptized in another Christian denomination should join our Faith Formation program to prepare to receive Sacraments. St. Patrick offers a Teen RCIA program specifically for high school students.

When do you meet?
This year we will meet weekly on Monday evenings.

What is a sponsor?
A sponsor is a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church who accompanies you on your journey through RCIA. The sponsor has the job of helping you through the process, and of verifying at the main rites that you are ready to take the next step.
